Standing Committees
 

All Committees should have representation from every chapter.


Budget and Finance Committee
The Budget and Finance Committee oversees the budget and finances of the organization and submits a budget providing for the major activities of the organization and its headquarters. This Committee reviews the organization’s financial procedures to achieve optimum managerial efficiency and makes recommendations for improvements and increased resources.

Bylaws Committee
The Bylaws Committee maintains up-to-date bylaws. This Committee interprets the Constitution and Bylaws for the membership. The Committee shall receive all proposed amendments to the Bylaws. All amendments will be reviewed and placed on appropriate forms prior to ratification by the body.

Membership Committee
The Membership Committee increases active membership in the organization. This Committee promotes, expands and stabilizes the membership of the organization. It receives and approves all membership applications. It shall accept the names of prospective chapter organizers from the body. It continuously reviews recommendations for reactivating and retaining the current membership. It further purposefully recruits new members to increase the membership and recommends candidates for Honorary Membership and Life Membership.

Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee requests and receives applications for each office being filled in the organization and presents a slate to the body for voting. This Committee submits to the membership a slate of candidates for elected office. Such candidates must meet the criteria for office as stipulated in the Bylaws. This Committee considers qualifications and requirements of each applicant and presents the slate of nominees to the body, in writing, thirty (30) days prior to the election. The President shall appoint the Chairperson Pro tem. This Committee also functions as the Election Committee. Nominations may also come from the floor.

Program Committee
The Program Committee assists committee chairpersons with the design and implementation of programs and activities for the local chapters. This Committee proposes, develops and implements programs, projects and activities for the ensuing year. It consists of all Chapter 1st Vice Presidents.

Scholarship Committee
The Scholarship Committee establishes the criteria for scholarships awarded to students who meet the criteria of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. This Committee establishes the criteria for selecting both the Boswell and the Sister-to-Sister Scholarship recipient(s). It disseminates scholarship information and guidelines to local high school seniors to evaluate their application packet(s) and select the most qualified recipients(s). The scholarship recipients(s) shall receive the award in a timely manner after providing proof of proper documentation from the college or university where they were accepted.
  • The Boswell Scholarship is awarded to high school graduates based on academic competition as outlined in the annual application.
  • The Sister-to-Sister Scholarship is awarded to women who are returning to school without the support of a spouse or family. NHBW, Inc. members can apply.
This Committee further maintains a cumulative notebook of scholarship recipients by each year, including their application and supporting evidence.

Art and Culture Committee
The Art and Culture Committee plans and implements all art and/or cultural programs and activities of the organization. This Committee ensures that any initiative set forth by the National Agenda will be implemented within the specified timeline, particularly in February (Black History) and March (Women in History), and includes the life and accomplishments of Fannie Lou Hamer. It further recognizes and promotes art and cultural events deemed significant in the African-American culture and the community.

Education Committee
The Education Committee plans and implements all educational programs and activities of the organization. This Committee enhances the professional development of chapter members through planned activities or workshops on various topics. It maintains communication with scholarship recipients to determine their current educational status, progress and academic accomplishments. It offers mentorship and advisement to current scholarship recipients to strengthen and/or enhance their educational achievement.

(It is our desire that scholarship recipients, upon graduation and gaining full employment, will join NHBW and continue the legacy of helping other youth to achieve.)

Health Committee
The Health Committee plans and implements all health programs and activities. This Committee sets forth to accomplish the health initiatives established by the membership that impact our African-American communities. It identifies and partners with organizations providing outreach activities related to the National health initiatives in the targeted communities. It provides activities and literature which promote healthy living and wellness for the community. Activities include, but are not limited to:
  1. Hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke
  2. Cancer prevention
  3. HIV/AIDS
  4. Diabetes
  5. Stress and mental health
  6. Infant and Adolescent development.
History Committee
The History Committee collects, prepares, compiles and maintains a pictorial, news and archival account of chapter activities. This Committee coordinates the contribution of pictures and/or documents for our scrapbook. It is able to retrieve any documents of past and future activities.

Planning Committee
The Planning Committee prepares, compiles and updates the policies and procedure manual. This Committee furthers the development of the Manual of Policy and Procedures by securing suggestions from the local chapters. It submits fundraising techniques that can be developed by individual chapters to boost their treasuries.

Newsletter Committee
The Newsletter Committee publishes the National Newsletter three (3) times annually, not to exceed the annual budget. The National Newsletter includes a "Job Bank", representation from all local chapters, and a message from the National President. This Committee consists of a representative from each local chapter. Committee members are responsible for submitting local chapter news and accomplishments to the National Newsletter Chairperson three (3) times annually.

Ritual of Sisterhood Committee
The Ritual of Sisterhood Committee updates the printed booklet whenever the Board of Directors adopts a new addition. This Committee communicates with each chapter to ensure that the Act(s) of Ritual are done at the conclusion of every meeting or at special events.

Legislation Committee
The Legislation Committee alerts all chapters, via the National Office, of pending legislation affecting women and children. This Committee tracks and collects all information on legislation affecting women and children, including a review and summary of pending federal budgets and the effect the cuts will have on programs targeted for women and children. It shares information on any developed position papers that have been distributed to elected officials.

Media Relations Task Force
The Media Relations Task Force is appointed for a limited term of one (1) year with a specific task to perform. This Committee consists of appointed and volunteer members. It prepares and presents a written report at the Annual Meeting.
