LOCAL PROGRAMS

The NHBW, Inc. recognizes the health disparities in African-American communities and is making every effort to close this gap and eventually eliminate these disparities. The 2006 objectives were for local chapters to touch 3,000 or more people.

Some highlights from our local 2006 campaigns:
  • Camden raised funds for a local women's shelter for women seeking employment;

  • Cherry Hill raised money for cancer research, while continuing to distribute food and clothes each month to families in need;

  • Chicago spread the word of wellness during the Juneteenth parade by distributing 400 pieces of literature;

  • District of Columbia presented "The Warning Signs of Stroke" to over 500,000 DC Metropolitan residents via radio, e-mails and lectures;

  • Gadsden County volunteered over 500 hours for events throughout the community, including health fairs;

  • Greater Metro Capital Area donated linens to a home for neglected and abused girls;

  • Joliet kicked off of its "Power to End Stroke Awareness Campaign" with a Women and Wellness Free Luncheon and Seminar;

  • Nashville continued its support of the Village of Cultural Arts Center, providing monthly donations towards school supplies throughout the year;

  • Orlando presented school supplies to the BETA center in Orlando for students in need, as well as distributed applications for the Kid Care program;

  • Phoenix participated in a walk/run for breast cancer awareness;

  • Southern Maryland conducted a facilitator-led focus group discussion on domestic violence;

  • Tallahassee distributed over 1,000 pieces of literature on cancer prevention and the Kid Care program.
The time and dedication each chapter has put forth to spread this message of wellness has reached over 500,000 women. Together, we have given 20 scholarships for higher education.

In 2007, we will continue to spread this message, reaching out to even more women and their children. For further information on our programs, or to assist us in this cause, please contact us.
