2006 National Programs
 

Each year, the membership assesses the pertinent issues affecting their communities and from among these issues, votes on its agenda and purpose for the year.

Alarming Facts:
  • In 2003 – African-American teens (aged 13-19) comprised 66% of all AIDs cases in this age group.
  • The average White family today owns nearly ten (10) times the property and other assets than the average African-American family.
  • African-Americans have almost twice the risk of first-ever strokes compared to Whites.
  • The death rate from stroke nationally is 54.3.
    • African-American males = 79
    • African-American Females = 69
  • At 30%, the African-American teen unemployment rate is 11% higher than the overall teen unemployment rate, more than six times the national average.
  • The US has the second worst newborn death rate in the modern world.
  • The infant mortality rate for African-Americans is 13.9 (number per 1,000 births) as compared to 5.8 (number per 1,000 births) for Whites.
  • African-American men and women have mortality rates one and a half to two times that of whites.
  • Disproportionately higher mortality rates for African-Americans are reported for heart disease, some types of cancer, AIDS, diabetes, homicide and suicide.
Based on these facts and figures, the membership has chosen Women & Wellness as its program initiative for 2006.
