A vibrant group of women met January 26, 1980 at the home of Willie Thomas with Annie R. Buckhanon (McDowell) as the coordinator.  At this time the Orlando Chapter, was organized as an affiliate of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. of Washington, D.C.

The original group members were Annie R. Buckhannon (McDowell), Coordinator; Mary P. Haynes, President; Leala Collins, Vice President;  Willie Thomas, Secretary; Irma holt, Financial Secretary; Evelyn Kin, Treasurer; Rosetta Vereen, Editor-in-Chief; and newcomers  Weinerfer Johnson, Courtesy and Laverne Williams.

Over the years we have recognized outstanding leaders in the community at our Annual Scholarship which is now our Distinguished Community Leaders Recognition Program, adopted families at Thanksgiving and Christmas, sponsored a legislative “Meet The Candidate Reception,’ supported the United Negro College Fund Telethon, supported the Tri-City Sickle Cell Walk-A-Thon, participated in Tom Joyner “Take A Love One to the Doctor Day”, participated in March of Dimes “Go Red Day” , supported projects by Central Florida Healthy Start Coalition and we continue to present many educational seminars and workshops focusing on self-esteem and other topics to the teenage mothers at the BETA Center.

We are a charitable organization dedicated to improving the lives of Black Families through support of the arts, culture, health, and human service programs.    The Orlando Chapter continues to embrace the MISSION of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc., and our national initiatives and programs.
