On June 25, 1994, a workshop for displaced homemakers was held at the local technical high school in Quincy, Florida. Among the presenters were four members of the Tallahassee Chapter of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc., Ms. Shirley Jones, Dr. Bertha Murray, Dr. Deidre Powell and Dr. Juanita Williams. Impressed with the presentations by these women and the mission of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. (NHBW), several women in attendance approached Ms. Geneva Wesley, Southern Regional Coordinator for NHBW, about establishing a chapter in Gadsden County. However, it was not until 1995 that the plan came to fruition.
On July 22, 1995, an informal meeting was called by Dr. Jessie Furlow and held with prospective members. Attending the first meeting were Ms. LaKaye Austin, Ms. Mary Davis, Ms. Alice Dupont, Ms. Sharon Elias, Ms. Sarah Figgers, Dr. Jessie Furlow, Ms. Catherine James, Ms. Ordania Jones, Ms. Vivian Kelly, Dr. Alma Littles, Mrs. Gwendolyn Powell-Robinson, Dr. Cyneetha Strong-Smith, Ms. Cynthia Walker and Ms. Willie Ruth Williams, these women became charter members of the Gadsden County Chapter of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc.
On August 12, 1995, an organizational meeting was held. The application for chartering was submitted by Dr. Jessie Furlow on September 13, 1995. The Gadsden County Chapter was chartered during the Annual Midyear Meeting of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. in September 1995 in Washington D.C.
The Chartering Ceremony was held on December 17, 1995, at the Simon Scott Senior Citizens Center, Quincy, Florida. The Ceremony was conducted by Ms. Geneva Wesley, Southern Regional Director of NHBW, and Ms. Irene Perry. The charter officers were Dr. Jessie Furlow, President; Ms. Alice Dupont, 2nd Vice President; Ms. Sharon Elias, Secretary; Ms. Sarah Figgers, Treasurer; and Ms. Gwendolyn Powell Robinson, Historian.
As the Gadsden County Chapter of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. grows and the needs of the community change, the Chapter will modify its programs and activities in order to best address the needs of the communities it serves.
