The NHBW Chicago Chapter is one of the first affiliates of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc., which was conceived by a group of women recognizing the need to establish a communications network between women’s organizations and the Congressional Black Caucus.  This group of women desired a national forum to articulate the needs and concerns of women and their children.

NHBW Chicago Chapter was founded four years following the creation of the national organization in the spring of 1978.  Under the direction of our National Founder, Dr. Arnita Boswell, a prominent activist and educator in Chicago, Dr. Wynetta Frazier, a leading clinical psychologist, worked to develop a chapter in the city of Chicago.  Both of these individuals recognized that meeting once a year in Washington during the Congressional Black Caucus would not suffice to meet the needs of women.

The initial mission of NHBW Chicago Chapter was to develop women for leadership positions, and, also to be advocates for women.  Although the focus has shifted somewhat over the years, the Chicago Chapter has been a strong advocate for women and children for more than 30 years.
